Coppice Farm Primary School

A small school with a HUGE heart!

PHONICS

Phonics Lead: Miss H Lynch

At coppice Farm Primary School we teach daily phonics sessions using a systematic synthetic phonics scheme called Monster Phonics. We know phonics is at the heart of how children learn to read and pride ourselves on ensuring early reading skills are embedded right from the start of your child's first year at school. Once children know the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they stand for, they’re ready to use those building blocks to read words and simple sentences. Building strong phonics skills in the early years of school is the key to your child becoming a fluent, strong, independent reader.

What is Monster Phonics?

The 26 letters of the alphabet and combinations of these letters make 44 speech sounds in English.  The 44 sounds (phonemes) are spelt by 144 different letter combinations (graphemes). For example, the sound A is spelt several different ways, including ay (play) and ai (train).

Traditional ways of learning to spell can be time-consuming and for some children they are ineffective. Monster Phonics teaches children to read by enabling them to identify the individual graphemes (letter combinations) ad blend the sounds (phonemes) together to read the word.

To support this process, Monster Phonics uses the 10 monsters to categorises all sounds into 10 simple areas. Furthermore, each monster has a different colour and that colour represents that way of spelling the sound.

What does our phonics curriculum intend to do?

Monster Phonics is a Department for Education validated systematic synthetic phonics programme designed to accelerate reading and spelling development through a multisensory, color-coded approach. It intends to make phonics memorable by and engaging by mapping 10 colour coded monsters to sounds.

Our phonics curriculum intends to build strong sound-letter links through repetition and consistent retrieval, and supports long term memory through games and carefully structured practice. Our curriculum intends to reduce cognitive load by giving learners a clear strategy for decoding new and unfamiliar words and encourages fluency. This gives children the confidence and resilience when reading.

Phonics supports the needs of all learners through high quality teaching, adaptive practice and the monster phonics multi-sensory approach. It supports EAL learners by making English sound patterns explicit and systematic. Monster phonics provides scaffolding and support for all pupils to ensure everyone succeeds.

Our curriculum intends to foster a love for reading by making it accessible and removing any barriers to learning.
